Week 4

What’s been happening in Room 12?

SRC- Our SRC representatives were selected! Thank you to all the applicants for taking the time to apply, the applications were of a high standard. Mrs Wright read each of the applications (anonymously) and then the students voted. Congratulations to our chosen reps; Bastien, Amelia, Olivia and Charlotte. First meeting is Friday week 5.

Science- In Science, we have been looking at pollination and how plants grow. Students enjoyed making a model of a flower and a bee this week to investigate how a bee pollinates a flower.

Oxford Words– Oxford words went home on Friday. These are a list of the words that when tested, your child spelt incorrectly. These words were pasted into student’s homework books so they don’t lose them.*If your child didn’t bring any words home, this is because they demonstrated that they could spell every word correctly.

Homework– I was most impressed with the effort students put into their first homework grid. Let’s keep up the effort! Although the students take the grid home on a Friday, the spelling words aren’t handed out until a Monday. However, the weekend allows them extra time to complete the other activities on the grid.

Week 3

Thank you to all the families who came to Acquaintance Night on Wednesday, we had a great turn out and it was lovely to meet you all and match names to faces!

Our learning in Week 3…

English:

We have finished our Oxford Sight Word testing and students will be bringing their words home in Week 4. We started our unit on Narrative writing with a focus on ‘how to write a good introduction’, looking specifically at character descriptions. We talked about the types of characters there are in Narratives and students enjoyed brainstorming adjectives to describe various character’s personalities and appearances.

Students will be starting our Spelling program on Monday. Please see the links below for a copy of the weekly table students will complete on their 5 words as well as the activity list for students to choose from. Students will have these in their spelling books already.

Maths:

We have been looking at various strategies to solve addition problems. Some of the strategies we have looked at are using a number line, front end addition and the splitting and chunking strategy. Ask your child to explain these strategies to you.

Front end addition (deal with the tens first, then the units)

Splitting and chunking (secret code)

Number line 36+43

We have also spent a lot of time in the first few weeks discussing what it means to have a ‘Growth Mindset’ as a learner. Students have made some posters to display in the corridor, demonstrating their understanding of what it means to have a Growth Mindset.

Homework grids went home on Friday afternoon and are due this Thursday week 4. Please remind students that they need to have their diary signed and both their diary and reader diary ready to hand in on Monday morning. Thanks

Week 2

We have survived a very hot second week of term!

Another busy week; establishing our class values, building the skills to work independently for our Literacy block, learning the ‘Secret Code’ in Maths, working on our Passion Projects with Simone in the library and beginning our Science and Geography units for the term.

We also had an exciting afternoon on Wednesday as we met our new Reception buddies in Room 02! We spent the afternoon in their classroom, joining in with some of the activities they enjoy whilst we got to know one another.

Thank you to the parents/volunteers who came in this week to help with reading! Next week, readers will be sent home. We love parent helpers for reading, everyday from 8:50-9:10am (except Thursdays as we have Art with Mr Pluck first thing).

Acquaintance Night

On Friday, students went home with a note displaying the times for Acquaintance night this coming Wednesday. Room 12 will be open from 6pm-6:50pm. The times have been structured so families can see classrooms and meet teachers from all age groups without clashing.

Rooms 11, 12 and 16 will be following a similar format for the evening. Students are invited to come with their families to show them around the classroom. On Monday, an information booklet will go home for you to read before Acquaintance night. If you have any questions about the booklet or anything that may not have been mentioned, please ask me on the night. 6:30-6:50pm is the time when most families will visit our room which gives me a chance to answer any common questions. I can also help anyone subscribe to our class blog or to the Class Dojo program while you are there.

I’m looking forward to seeing you there and the students having the opportunity to show you their learning so far.

February 3

Welcome

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the blog for Room 12.

This blog will be used to showcase student learning and to share information with families. Feel free to comment on any of our photos or posts throughout the year and please take the time to visit the blog regularly to keep informed on what’s happening.

What a great first week I’ve had with the students in Rm 12! I have been so impressed with how they have quickly settled into our class routines.

We’ve had a busy week, working on;

School values and life rafts, team tasks, Growth mindset videos, selfie learner profiles and various Maths and English activities.

It was also great to meet many of you throughout the week and I am looking forward to seeing you at Acquaintance night on Wed the 15th of February.

Kind regards,

Meg Wright
